Rick Perry Signs NOM Pledge
Texas Governor Rick Perry joined the ranks of fellow conservatives and presidential-hopefuls Michelle Bachman and Mitt Romney in signing the National Organization for Marriage’s pledge to “protect” marriage. According to Brian Brown, president of NOM, the purpose of the pledge is to “move from vague values statements to concrete actions to protect marriage.” The pledge further states that Perry, if elected president, will support a Constitutional amendment defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. Additionally, he promises to appoint U.S. Supreme Court and federal judges who will “reject the idea our Founding Fathers inserted a right to gay marriage into our Constitution.”
New Immigration Laws a Boon for LGBT Families
On August 18, President Obama, in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security, announced that LGBT family ties, including gay spouses and partners, will be considered as DHS conducts a case-by-case review of the approximately 300,000 immigrants currently in deportation proceedings. The DHS has plans to cancel “low-priority” cases, meaning that many LGBT families are no longer in danger of separation. Immigration Equality, hails this announcement as “groundbreaking,” stating that “prior to prior to the administration’s decision that DOMA is unconstitutional, no deportations were cancelled or delayed due to lesbian or gay partnerships or marriages.”
