World AIDS Day 2009: Universal Access and Human Rights

Published November 29, 2009
Aids awareness Ribbon

Over 33 million people worldwide are estimated to be living with HIV. Between 1987 and 2007 alone, more than 25 million have been lost to AIDS, making it one of the most devastating pandemics in recorded history. An estimated 1 million Americans are living with HIV; 21% do not even know it. Here in Maryland, about 30,000 individuals are living with HIV and over 15,000 have died since the first recorded cases.

In 1988, the World Health Organization established December 1 as World AIDS Day in to commemorate those whom we have lost to HIV/AIDS, to encourage people living with HIV to continue in their efforts to live healthy, and to recognize the efforts of government, service providers, community-based organizations and individuals who provide HIV prevention, care, treatment and support services. This year, many local organizations and community groups will hold programs and services to raise awareness and focus attention on the impact of the global HIV/AIDS pandemic on individuals and communities.
