About the functions and management of the province

The districts form an administrative layer between the government in The Hague and the municipalities. You can see that in what the interrupt does. Sometimes a county is a conduit, often coordinating matters between municipalities in an area. Matters of concern to the entire province are handled by the province itself. The tasks and powers of the governorate lie in different areas. A special task is the election of senators.

The Netherlands has twelve provinces, most of which have existed for a long time: Groningen, Freslin, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland, Flevoland, Utrecht, North Holland, South Holland, Zeeland, North Brabant and Limburg. The smallest province is Flevoland, which has existed since 1986. Each province has a capital. The main advantage of this capital is that the county house is located there. This is the building where the county council and the regional executive meet and where many of the provincial officials work.
