Lionel Scaloni remains the coach of Argentina. The successful coach, who led his country to win its first world title since 1986 in Qatar at the end of last year, agreed to extend the contract until the 2026 World Cup.
Scaloni and Tapia met today to reach an agreement for the coming years. “We succeeded,” the Argentine Football Association said in a statement.
The 44-year-old Scaloni has been coaching the national team since 2018 and led the Argentines to victory in the Copa America in 2021. It was the first time since 1993 that the Albicelestes won a major trophy. With Lionel Messi as the star player, he gave Argentina its third world title after 1978 and 1986 by defeating France in the World Cup final in Qatar.
When he was appointed, there were still serious doubts about whether Scaloni was the right candidate. Claudio Tapia, president of the Argentine Football Association, said that 99 percent of people thought we were wrong or even crazy. “But this team made people happy.”
A new challenge for Klinsmann
Jurgen Klinsmann has just started a new challenge. South Korea appointed the German coach as national coach. Klinsmann, 58, has signed a contract until 2026, the union said.
Klinsmann’s first match with South Korea is an exhibition match against Colombia on 24 March. The former striker was active as a coach at Hertha BSC three years ago, from where he left in February 2020. Klinsmann was previously the national coach of Germany and the United States. He was also the coach of Bayern Munich.
South Korea reached the round of 16 in the World Cup in Qatar under the leadership of Paulo Bento, where it was eliminated after its defeat 4-1 against Brazil. The Portuguese finished his job after the World Cup.
“I am very happy and honored to be the national coach of the South Korean national team,” Klinsmann said in a statement issued by the federation. , I understand that the national team has been getting better and better over a long period of time and is achieving results. We will do our best to achieve success in the next Asian Cup and the 2026 World Cup.”
Klinsmann added that he considers it an honor to follow in the footsteps of national coaches such as Bento and Guus Hiddink. Under the guidance of the Dutch coach, South Korea reached the semi-finals of the World Cup in their country in 2002. Dick Advocaat and Pim Verbeek also took care of the national team.
