Michael van der Mark was injured in a heavy fall during the second Superbike race in Assen on Sunday. According to the first report, it will be a broken femur. Van der Mark was taken to hospital in Assen.
Thirty-year-old van der Mark created the so-called highsider and then had to undergo a lengthy treatment on the side of the track where his left leg could already be seen to be in an unnatural position.
Van der Mark, from Berkschenhoek, broke a leg a year ago in a fall during a mountain bike ride. On his recovery, he suffered a broken hip in May after a practice crash at the Estoril circuit in Portugal.
It went wrong again in early March this year in Mandalika, Indonesia. Van der Mark crashed in the second race weekend on the Superbike and broke two fingers. He recovered in time for action in Assen.
Spain’s Alvaro Bautista won the second race in Trento. With this, Ducati strengthened its leading position in the world championship standings. Bautista won both major races in the first two race weekends, as well as sprint races in Australia and Assen.
