ATGB’s advice on smoke exhaust gallery in square shape

Can the portico of a square building with an unenclosed courtyard be considered an exhibit of a standard building decision and can it be said that no additional measures are necessary as a result? This was the question on which the Advisory Committee on Implementation and Equivalence of Building Regulations (ATGB) recently issued an opinion.

A new square-shaped residential building (enclosed building) seven storeys above ground level, which will be built, will be accessed via circular galleries along the enclosed inner garden. The CFD applicant has demonstrated that an enclosed courtyard garden can be considered as a non-enclosed space.

disagreement

The applicant had a different opinion with the fire service about the extent to which galleries along the inner garden could be considered non-enclosed spaces in order to adequately dissipate heat and smoke in the event of a fire, so that the facades along the gallery would not have to be fire-resistant.

CFD account

The Fire Service considers that the CFD account does not sufficiently explain that the galleries operate as an unenclosed space: the CFD account does not make clear enough the environmental conditions in the galleries. The applicant states that it is evident from the CFD calculation that the discharge of heat and smoke from galleries along an enclosed inner garden is comparable to the discharge of heat and smoke from a standard straight gallery.

advice

In this case, the Advisory Committee on Enforcement and Equivalence of Building Regulations (ATGB) advises the following on the application of Building Regulations:

Can the portico of a square building with an unenclosed courtyard be considered an exhibit of a standard building decision and can it be said that no additional measures are necessary as a result?

Yes, as long as the galleries have a flat roof, non-closable openings in the longitudinal facade, a maximum gallery depth of 1.8m, are specified in accordance with Part 5.3 of NEN 1087, and have a supply and discharge capacity of at least 100 dm3/ sec per m3 The net volume of space. This comes from the explanation of Article 2.107 twelfth paragraph added to Stb. 201, 147 renumbered to the tenth paragraph.
