One of the biggest drawbacks of electric vehicles since their introduction to society has been their range and the fact that you can’t easily stretch your car by a quick squeeze at a gas station to top-up (sure, you can… places, but it can take 45 minutes to get a meaningful charge).

Over the years, EV manufacturers have developed vehicles with even more efficient batteries to solve this problem, and today many leading EVs can provide hundreds of miles on a single battery, while also featuring fast charging features. Again, to start when you need a refill.

A team of Australian students decided that even that wasn’t enough and have now designed an EV that can travel over 1,000km on a single battery. In fact, this car is so efficient that it even managed to get a Guinness World Record for performance.

Reported by Top gearCalled the Sunswift 7, the car covered 1,000 km (approximately 620 miles) at a speed of approximately 52 mph, covering 12 hours on a single trip and holding the Australian EV speed record.

The car was created as a replacement for the now-cancelled Solar Challenge (which asked people to travel from the north to the south of the largest country, powered by the sun), and these students decided to try building their own.
