Maryland Man Receives Pig Heart Transplant in Groundbreaking Surgery
In a remarkable medical breakthrough, a Maryland man named Lawrence Faucette is on the road to recovery after undergoing an experimental heart transplant, receiving a heart from a pig just a month ago. Faucette, who was ineligible for a traditional heart transplant due to other health issues, was offered this groundbreaking surgery by doctors at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
A recently released video by the hospital showcases Faucette’s determination as he undergoes physical therapy to regain his strength following the surgery. It is the second of its kind performed by the Maryland medical team, with the first patient surviving for only two months before the transplanted heart failed. Their aim is to accumulate sufficient knowledge to support formal xenotransplant studies approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
