An emotional Ben O’Connor could not believe his luck after taking the stage for Dignes at the Tour de France. The Australian climber of the AG2R Citroen is the best in a large lead group on the alpine stage. “It was always a dream,” he says, glad he finished. In addition, he rises to second place in the standings, 2.01 minutes from the yellow jersey.
“It simply came to our notice then. To achieve this today, it attracts confidence in me. I want to thank everyone who trusted me. My wife, my parents, my friends in Australia and Europe. This is great, ”says O’Connor, who won five minutes (!) More than Matteo Catanio.
At the foot of the final climb he still had Nairo Quintana and Sergio Higuain on his side, but he quickly freed them. “It simply came to our notice then. It brings so much joy. But I enjoyed every moment. I am also very happy for the team, they have faith in me and have brought me so much beauty. This is very special, ”said the stage winner.
“I told you this morning that it was not my intention to take part in the early flight,” he laughs. “But a large group walked away and I passed. When I got into it, I was waiting because I didn’t know what to do. I heard we had five minutes, so I knew we had a chance to win in the standings. I knew I could win on a long day like this, but it was a weird ride and the weather was bad. ”
