Bestenaar highlight on golf course: ‘This was the most important pitch of my life so far’ | sports area

Golfer Lars van Megel made his tournament debut last week at the illustrious Scottish golf course St Andrews. The 28-year-old from Best immediately cut into the heavily occupied field and witnessed golf legends like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy in person.

Lars, your first major and then make the cut right away. How was that?

“Really great. Of course you don’t know what to expect, what the atmosphere is, how good the level is actually. I’ve never played against the big guys from America, and that alone is a great experience. In the end I finished 53rd and I don’t feel like I played really well. On the one hand, that’s positive, because it means there’s still some stretch. On the other hand, it’s a shame I didn’t get it all out.”

What was the experience like playing in St Andrews, which is after all known as the “Home of Golf”?

The tournament is very big and professionally equipped, compare it to Wimbledon. A major tournament is played four times a year and the British Open is the oldest tournament in the world. There were 1.3 million ticket requests, of which only 290 thousand could be met. While playing golf, I try to focus on my own game, but it’s really special when there are a lot of people in the stands.”

What is the best moment of the week for you?

156 players participated, of whom 70 participated. On the second day of playing I had to dig the last hole to be a part of that. Then I made a putt from over three meters away, and that was enough for me to be a part of that. That was a really great moment. It also shows that I am on the right path and doing the right things. That knockout blow was the most important throw of my life so far.”

What is your biggest win so far?

On the Challenge Tour I won a championship in France in 2019. That year I also earned enough points to play on the DP World Tour, the best championship series on this side of the ocean. Last year I came back from this class, but now I’m back on the road again. Last week my father, girlfriend and some other relatives were there. It was really great to be able to share my first break into the major with them.”

What is your ultimate goal in golf?

,, I want to finally go to the PGA Tour in the United States. In addition to that, I also want to play more majors and eventually compete to win. The atmosphere in which I played last week was really great, and I definitely want to experience that a lot.”
