Former British Prime Minister Boris Johnson withdraws from the leadership struggle for the Conservative Party. He says he had hoped his opponent and former finance minister Rishi Sunak and Benny Mordaunt would meet, but says he failed to do so. With his withdrawal, the path appears clear for Sunak to succeed former Prime Minister Truss.

“I am convinced that I am in a good position to give the Conservatives an electoral victory in 2024. In recent days, I have unfortunately had to conclude that this is not the right move. You cannot govern effectively without a united party in Parliament.

The Conservative Party will vote on Truss’ successor tomorrow. With Johnson out of the race, it appears that the 42-year-old political veteran, Sunak, is the candidate with the best cards. He was also the only conservative to date to receive the necessary 100 votes from MPs. He had 130 today, according to the BBC, more than enough for a race to lead.
