Cardiff City are not allowed to make transfers after refusing to pay Sala

The Welsh club has confirmed to the BBC that Cardiff City will not be allowed to sign any players during the next transfer window. The club is thus punished for refusing to pay the first part of Emiliano Sala’s transfer fee.

The Argentine soccer player died in 2019 during a flight from France to the UK. 28-year-old Argentine Sala moved from French club Nantes to Cardiff City for 17 million euros at the time. His plane disappeared from the radar over the channel. Sala’s body was recovered, and the pilot’s remains were never found.

Cardiff City have to pay Nantes €6m for the deceased striker. This ruling by FIFA last summer was confirmed by the International Court of Sport (CAS). The clubs tried to find a solution to a financial settlement in consultation, but it was not successful. Then Nantes went to FIFA.

Cardiff chairman Mohamed Dallman said “we have not paid and do not intend to do so at the moment. His club is 20th in the Championship, England’s second tier.
