Changing abortion in America shocks many: ‘What a setback’

Revocation of the national right to abortion is a “tragic mistake”. This is what US President Joe Biden said in response to the destruction The national right to abortion by the US Supreme Court.

US states can now decide for themselves how to regulate abortion. Biden said that “women’s health and lives are in danger as a result” and this is being done in the name of “extremist ideology”. He added that the court took away a “fundamental” constitutional right for many Americans. The President also said that women who live in states where abortion is prohibited can always go to states where abortion is permitted.

Changing abortion in the United States leads to international criticism

The President of the United States is not the only one being criticized. Internationally, the response to the US Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the constitutional right to abortion has been largely negative. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson called it a “huge step backward” and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau calls it “terrible news” from the United States. French President Emmanuel Macron wrote on Twitter that he stands in solidarity with women and that their freedoms must be protected.

Some US states moved quickly to ban abortions yesterday. Conservative Missouri was the first to do so. It happened about two hours after the Supreme Court ruling, which amended the abortion law.

The first states were actually passed to ban abortion

“Missouri has become the first state in the nation to effectively end abortion,” Attorney General Eric Schmidt said on Twitter. “This is a historic day for the sanctity of life.”

Missouri will not be the last. South Dakota and Indiana have also announced steps to do so, and abortion providers in Wisconsin say the procedure is now prohibited there. The Supreme Court’s decision to strike down the constitutional right to abortion gives all 50 states to ban the procedure.
