The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has recently released a report that reveals an alarming increase in vaccine exemption rates across more than 40 states, posing a potential threat to public health. The findings indicate that the overall vaccine exemption rate for the 2022-2023 school year has reached a record high of 3% among the 3.8 million children entering kindergarten.

The CDC’s report considered exemption data for state-required vaccines among public school kindergarteners from 49 states and Washington, D.C., as well as data from private school kindergarteners provided by 48 states and the District. Shockingly, exemption rates have surged in 41 states, with several states such as Alaska, Arizona, and Idaho reporting rates exceeding 5%. Notably, Idaho has the highest reported exemption rate of 12.1%.

However, Montana was the only state excluded from the analysis, as it failed to report kindergarten vaccination data for both school years. Despite the rise in exemptions, the report underlines that overall vaccine coverage remains near 93% for all reported vaccines, including DTap, polio, and measles, mumps, and rubella.
