Ornamental garden plans were announced in 2017. The garden was to extend to about 12 acres and has been described as “one of the most ambitious Chinese gardens ever built in the West.” China National Park, as the park should have been called, should have strengthened relations between America and China.
The garden does not seem to succeed at all. According to CNN, counterintelligence officials smelled the danger as they dived into the project. The white pagoda, about 20 meters high, will be strategically placed on one of the highest points in Washington, D.C., about two miles from the United States Capitol. According to CNN, this will be a strategic place to intercept various signals from the Capitol. “It was also disturbing that Chinese officials wanted to build the pagoda with materials that would be shipped to the United States in diplomatic suitcases,” CNN wrote. US Customs officials should not check these diplomatic bags.
According to CNN, counterintelligence officials discovered that China had equipment capable of “capturing and interfering with Department of Defense communications.” The equipment would also be able to interfere with communications from the Strategic Air Command, which oversees US nuclear weapons.
After the discoveries, the Americans halted the garden project, and the Chinese government vehemently denies any attempt to spy on the United States.
