Nyck de Vries says he had a great Friday in Australia, but according to the AlphaTauri driver, there is still a lot of work to do to improve on Saturday and Sunday.

De Vries will make his official debut in the game this season with the AlphaTauri team. The 28-year-old Dutchman rode solid weekends in Bahrain and Saudi Arabia, but still has no points to his name. Red Bull Racing’s sister team has had a somewhat disappointing start to the new calendar year in terms of performance. Partly for that reason, the first updates were already bolted to the AT04 in Melbourne this weekend, which Driver was able to find out on Friday.

Problem with GPS

The first free practice session went well for De Vries with the fourteenth fastest time, but during the second practice session he encountered a problem with his car. As a result, the AlphaTauri driver could barely drive: “Today’s sessions were different in terms of conditions, but also in terms of learning and trying different things,” says de Vries. “The GPS problem didn’t help, of course, especially given the layout of the track, so warming up the tires played an important role,” he said.

in detail

He continued: “We had a good first free practice and then made some adjustments for second practice to get a better idea of what our updates were doing. It was a tricky circuit with some grass between the track and the wall. There was no room for error. A few more around the updates later today. There are unknowns, but we’ll find out more after tonight’s analysis. We should build on that in the third free practice tomorrow.”
