Behind Vollering, her Belgian teammate Lotte Kopecky sprinted into second place, ahead of the Dutch Shereen van Anrooy (Trek-Segafredo). World Champion Annemiek van Vleuten (Movistar), in her farewell year, finished 11th.
Vollering has already won Strade Bianche and Dwars door Vlaanderen this year. In 2021 it was the best in Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Last year, Vollering finished second behind compatriot Van Vleuten in the inaugural women’s Tour de France.
The race started over many hills in Limburg at the start of the domestic rounds as the Cauberg, Bemelerberg and Geulhemmerberg had to be climbed each time. Lucinda Brand, who was previously part of a lead group, attacked again after the first end pass. Now she has Sabrina Stoltins. In the second lane in Welt, with more than 55 kilometers to go, the two were half a minute ahead of a group of nearly all the favourites.
Shortly before the fourth crossing of Coburg, the two’s journey came to an end. Italian Soraya Paladin was the first striker in the last domestic tour. World champion Van Vleuten made an attempt at her last gold, followed by Poland’s Katarzyna Neviadoma, the previous winner, and Dutch Quinte Ton, who sprinted to the Pimelerberg course.
The big names started behind: Paladin passed Toon first, followed by a group of people looking at each other. Australian Grace Brown jumped to number one. Paladin pushed back on the Cauberg, while Riejanne Markus led the peloton. Fullering was there too.
This was the first time that Fullering was in the picture. It was a good time at the top, she had more than two kilometers to go, and her attack followed. With her teammate Kopecky in the chasing group, the enthusiasm for the chase was not great either. It was a winning match for SD Worx.
Fullering: I don’t quite believe it.
“Finally,” Voehlering repeated several times after winning the Amstel Gold Race. She just won the race in which she first had to beat Marianne Vos and then Italy’s Marta Cavalli in the last two years. “I still can’t quite believe it,” said Fullering.
“We had a good race as a team, we were all there,” I look back. Special mention goes to Mischa Bredewold and Lorena Wiebes. Annemiek van Vleuten will end her career at the end of this year without the Amstel Gold Race on her list of honours. World champion Movistar was particularly hampered by bad weather in her final attempt to win in Limburg. “My legs felt like a block of concrete,” she complained to NOS.
Van Vleuten (40) was hoping and counting on better weather. “I put on the coat too late. Halfway through the course, I knew enough. My legs were blocked by the cold,” said Van Vleuten, who finished 11th, 8 seconds behind winner Demi Fullering. “I wasn’t good enough today. “
Van Vleuten has finished in the top 10 in the Gold Race three times, her best finish after Poland’s Katarzyna Nivyaduma in 2019.
