The 26-year-old Limburger is second on the main table, where Alison van Uydwank (WTA 58) and Creed Minnen (WTA 80) also appeared, and will compete in the first round against the qualifying round.
Mertens, who won the Gibsland Trophy in Melbourne early last year, said: “It’s a pleasure to be back in Australia. Besides, I have a lot of great memories here and hope to create new ones this year.
Mertens is a new coach under Town. After two successful collaborations with Robbe Ceyssens, the Belgian No. 1 has now teamed up with David’s brother Simon Coffin.
“After working with Rob for over five years, I wanted a little change,” he explained. “Have a different perspective and new perspectives. I think it’s important to change that. Let’s see how things develop, but this time everything is going well.
