FC Emmen secured a place in the Eredivisie. On a visit to FC Dordrecht, a 0-1 win was enough for a promotion. Roy Mendes scored the only goal for the Kitchen Champion Division captain.
Spread over different sections, falling into each other and players’ arms, hundreds of FC Emmen fans traveled with them. Dick Luken’s side needed another victory in advance to ensure promotion to the Eredivisie. And this victory was achieved tonight over FC Dordrecht, albeit with a difficulty 0-1. This led to great joy among those who were vigilant of Drenthe. They have turned De Krommedijk into a real festival temple. “We are at the top,” echoed over the stands cheerfully.
Before the celebration on the pitch, things threatened to spiral out of control for a period, when Dordrecht supporters sought to confront the visiting fans who entered the stadium. ME had to come to restore peace.
FC Emmen will play against Feyenoord and Ajax again next season. Unofficially, they’ve known this for a while in the Kitchen Champion Division, where Lukkien’s team simply turned out to be the strongest of all after a poor start. After the victory over FC Dordrecht, there was no longer any doubt about the immediate future. Mendes target enough atmospheric Krommedijk to secure the upgrade once and for all.
As is often the case in these types of matches, the tension was palpable. Until Mendes’ goal, Red and White had an already tough time with the mighty Dordrecht, who defended himself bravely. After this goal, the nerves seemed to get worse. This was particularly the case after Kezia Veendorp had to leave the field prematurely in the final stage after his second yellow card. FC Emmen is still holding out.
That’s why red and white can be officially honored tomorrow. This takes place in the square in front of the Town Hall in Emmen. At least 20,000 fans are expected to attend the ceremony. Tonight, the players, staff and supporters of the club have already served for that feast. The beer was pressed to “we’re on top” sounds.
Battle for place 2
In addition to FC Emmen, another club will be promoted from the Kitchen Champion Division, but any team will remain exciting for some time. FC Volendam is currently in the coveted second place, but it is far from certain. For example, third-placed FC Eindhoven lost 1-3 to Young PSV and saw Roda GC come close again. This team of Kerkrade won an impressive match against last-placed Helmond Sport (5-3).
But there are more contenders for this coveted second place. ADO Den Haag won 0-1 at Jong AZ Stadium and could climb to third place through a make-up match against Jong PSV. Excelsior could have come third today, but it ended in a 1-1 draw over MVV Maastricht.
FC Volendam will play Jung Ajax today at 4.30 pm. View all results and standings here†
