Eminar Kjell Sherpin is close to signing a four-season contract with an option for another year with English club Brighton & Hove Albion.
The move is a dream come true for the 21-year-old goalkeeper. According to sources, Scherpen is currently in England, where he is likely to be presented later this week at Brighton & Hove Albion.
News of the impending transfer has leaked, after this week Kiel Scherbin was absent from the training camp that Ajax invested in De Lott in Overijssel. At the end of May, Brighton and Hove Albion had already shown an interest in the long-time goalkeeper, but at that time the English club and Ajax had not reached an agreement on the €5 million transfer fee. Scherpen is still under contract until mid-2023 in Amsterdam.
Not smooth sailing
In recent seasons, Emmen wore the Ajax shirt, after moving from FC Emmen in 2019. Scherpen developed strong both physically and technically, but in the end he participated in only four matches in the main team. It wasn’t always smooth sailing. The Europa League match against Roma is still in the minds of many Ajax players, when Sherbin missed a free kick by Lorenzo Pellegrini. In total, Scherpen played two Eredivisie matches for Ajax last season, played once in the KNVB Cup, once in the European League, and was fifteen times among publications with promises in the first division.
In Brighton, Sherpin will have to compete with Spaniard Robert Sanchez, who is currently still in the European Championship. The goalkeeper became the first goalkeeper last year after Australian Matthew Ryan moved to Arsenal.
