Factbox – How is the Hollywood writers’ strike affecting TV shows?

Thousands of Hollywood film and television writers have gone on strike starting Tuesday, in a move that will disrupt television production. How will the Writers Guild of America strike affect viewers’ favorite TV shows and movies?

Which shows will feel the first effects of the strike?

Late-night talk shows like “Jimmy Kimmel Live” and “The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon” are expected to be instantly blackened and put back on the air. This means that new episodes will not be available on traditional networks, nor on streaming services like Hulu and Peacock that make shows available the next day.

The next series to be disrupted would be the daytime soap operas, as they are traditionally scripted shortly before filming.

Comedies and dramas currently airing can complete their season without a break — their episodes for the next few weeks have already been written and filmed.

What would happen if the strike continues?

A prolonged strike could delay the start of the fall TV season, when networks offer new scripts and new seasons of their hits. Writing for the fall season usually begins in May or June.

What about streaming services?

Netflix, which offers shows around the world, said it can extend its service with shows produced outside the United States. But her American series will take a beating if the hit continues.

HBO Max, which will change its name to Max at the end of May, has saved the programming for release under its new name.

newscast survives because its writers are subject to yet another union. The same goes for unscripted reality shows like “Big Brother” and “The Bachelor.”

What about movies?

The influx of movies into theaters isn’t going to drop right away because it takes two to three years to make movies and studios have a bunch of movies already written and shot. It would take a long strike to boycott the release of films.
