It is the Dutch driver’s 1,000th award from Red Bull for winning his second world title in motorsport’s highest category.
Highest score ever
Formula 1 drivers have given the most points to Verstappen, who has won fifteen grands prix this year and achieved the highest points ever in the championship.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc finished second in the drivers’ vote, the same as this year’s final World Cup standings.
Mercedes drivers Lewis Hamilton and George Russell finished third together in points. Britain’s Lando Norris of McLaren finished fifth in the poll.
This was followed by Fernando Alonso (Alpine) and Carlos Sainz (Ferrari). Alexander Albon (Williams), Sebastian Vettel (Aston Martin) and Sergio Perez (Red Bull) finished eighth together.
Not the first time
Hamilton was the only one of the twenty drivers to abstain.
Verstappen was also voted Driver of the Year in the popular trade magazine Autosport’s poll at the beginning of December. Last week, fellow athletes and the professional jury voted him Dutch Sportsman of the Year for the third time at the Sports Gala.
