Game of Thrones has chosen Caceres as a base for European films

Members of the HBO production team are staying at local hotels and have contacted local companies who will provide technical assistance. The American fantasy TV series has had its art office in the city since July last year, and according to production company sources, it will stay there for a long time because “Caceres is the European base of filming and has offices and a full. Art team will be located.”

Sources close to HBO have confirmed to regional newspaper El Periodico de Extremadura that filming for Game of Thrones won’t officially begin until October, but the economic impact has already begun. “It involves complex footage, so many other technicians and film experts are needed.”

Episodes of “House of Dragons” will be filmed in Caceres itself, as announced on June 30 by Luis Salaya, the city’s mayor. Shooting began in April and the cast is expected to arrive in Caceres this fall. Production house Fresco Films, Spain’s link for productions, has also chosen locations in Trujillo, which is also a World Heritage City in Extremadura.

It is the second time that the popular TV series has chosen Caceres as one of its locations. In 2016, several episodes of the seventh season were already filmed in the historical center of the city. That same year, the production team traveled to Los Barruecos in Malpartida de Cáceres to capture the epic battle of the same season.

However, the filming of “House of the Dragon” is not going smoothly due to the global health situation. Filming had to stop last month after a production member tested positive for Covid-19 while filming scenes in the UK.

In December 2016, two days were filmed in the ancient city. As a result, the Arco de la Estrella, the Plaza de Santa María, the Cuesta de la Compañía and the Plaza de las Veletas have become timeless and are often visited by fans.

Earlier, Malpartida de Cáceres hosted all the teams to shoot the big fight. This took 23 days. Trujillo Castle was the first filming location in Extremadura. Bloody conflicts between the Lannisters, Starks, and Targaryens were fought with the County of Caceres as a backdrop.

Game of Thrones is the most watched series in history. Fantasy TV series based on books from the series A Song of Ice and Fire by American author George R. R. Martin.
