He already had a lot of damage

Nyck de Vries has so far had the dream start to his first Formula 1 season that he undoubtedly had in mind. A number of costly accidents could rock his future in F1. Admittedly, we’re being a bit opportunistic here, but motorsport itself.

AlphaTauri offered a contract at the end of last year in the hope that Nyck de Vries would take over the team. His younger teammate Yuki Tsunoda had not been riding regularly until then and was too young in his actions. De Vries, 28, had the necessary experience in Formula 2 and Formula E before entering Formula 1.

Nyck de Vries slower than Tsunoda

Surprisingly, with the first four races of the season behind us, a completely different picture is painted. Because, where Nyck de Vries has struggled as a rookie, Tsunoda has had a remarkably strong start to the year. Apart from Tsunoda’s retirement in last weekend’s sprint race, de Vries has not beaten his Japanese team-mate in any race or qualifying in Formula 1 this year.

Additionally, Nyck de Vries spends the money his team needs. This year, Nyck de Vries has already been damaged three times, although it should be noted that the Dutchman was not responsible each time. For example, during the Australian Grand Prix the new Logan Sergeant fell behind the Dutchman, ending de Vries’ race prematurely.

Several crashes during the Azerbaijan Formula 1 GP

Last weekend, Nyck de Vries suffered a lot of damage during the Grand Prix of Azerbaijan, for which he can be blamed. Twice he kissed the wall near the path in Baku.

As far as we can tell from the pictures, the front suspension was destroyed twice, he destroyed a nose wing, and the right front braking system also needed replacing after his Formula 1 qualifying crash in Baku. Not very convenient, because team bosses are not happy about drivers who cause too much damage.

780,000 euros in damage in Formula 1

We have written recently about the costs of accidents in Formula 1. F1 teams are a bit secretive about the exact costs, but a nose and rear wing are estimated to cost around 140,000 euros each and the front suspension will soon be around 250,000 euros. With that, Nyck de Vries would have suffered around 780,000 euros in damages so far. Of course this is a rough estimate.

Also, a bright future in Formula 1 has yet to be written for the Dutch driver. Mistakes are part of a rookie year, but de Vries’ extensive experience in other racing classes has raised the bar a bit higher for him. The truth is that Nick de Vries needs to turn the tide. Mick Schumacher knows how quickly you can be kicked out of Formula 1 if you don’t perform as expected and saddle the team with high repair costs.
