The Amsterdam UMC writes this, which publishes the research results Lancet Infectious DiseasesA medical science journal specializing in infectious diseases.
significant risk
In some bacterial species, the chance of disease can be as high as 19 percent, which scientists say is a significant risk.
Patients included in the studies were critically ill, had multiple underlying diseases, and were more likely to acquire other infections.
Difficult to treat
Amsterdam UMC explains that it’s a problem when people are carriers of this resistant bacteria and then get an infection from it. This is something that can happen during hospitalization.
“If this is the case, it is difficult to treat. It complicates the treatment of patients admitted to another hospital,” says the Amsterdam UMC.
This is not the first time that bacterial resistance to antibiotics has come under the microscope. This phenomenon has been known for some time as a growing problem worldwide.
Amsterdam UMC says: “This resistance makes it difficult to treat certain infections, for which there are only a few and more expensive antibiotics.”
“Some countries already have problems with infections caused by bacteria for which no treatment is possible.”
Further research is needed
Through their findings, the researchers hope to enable more research that will lead to the development of an approach to the emerging problem. In the meantime, security providers can be more aware of the risks.
