How Holland can get 3 Champions League tickets

PSV Eindhoven resumes chasing the Champions League, in a very important season for the Netherlands. The biggest club football tournament will be fixed in 2024, and the distribution of tickets by that time depends on the performance in that season. Holland could be active in the Champions League with at least 3 clubs in 2024. What should be done for it and why is the PSV game really important? We explain it to you.

New UEFA Champions League format

The Champions League has had the same format since 2003, with 32 clubs in the main tournament, divided into 8 groups. However, starting in 2024, this group stage will give way to one big rating. The field of participants will then consist of 36 clubs, 4 more than now. Instead of 6 group matches – 3 opponents, home and away – there are 8 matches in the first stage of the tournament, against 8 different opponents.

At the end of the stage, the numbers 1 through 8 advance to the eighth final. Numbers 9 and 24 will play play-off games against each other, aiming for a place in those eighth finals. From there, the setup is the same as in the current Champions League. After the eighth finals, quarter-finals, semi-finals and final follow-up.

Minimum 1, maximum 2 Dutch clubs

The Netherlands currently delegates a maximum of two teams to the Champions League. As the national champion, Ajax enters immediately, player No. 2 PSV must play the preliminary rounds. The distribution of tickets depends on the ranking of the European laboratories. This ranking contains the countries with the best performing European clubs, created in the last 5 seasons. The current ranking can be found here. Since the lab rankings always run two seasons ahead, this season will determine the ticket distribution in 2024.

Sticking to 6 is very important

As Dutch clubs perform better in Europe, the Netherlands has moved up significantly in the rankings. Not so long ago in the 14th place, but now “we” is in the 6th place and that could have disastrous consequences. If the Netherlands are still sixth at the end of this season, the champions and No. 2 in the Eredivisie could enter directly into the Champions League in 2024.

Eindhoven

Find one or two additional tickets

The season is still long, but the Netherlands is now virtually guaranteed two direct tickets to the Champions League. In addition, the No. 3 player in the Eredivisie is then allowed to play the preliminary rounds, with the aim of securing a place in the main tournament. However, things could improve for the 6th-ranked Netherlands, if they get past the 5th-ranked France this season. In this case, even three clubs from the Eredivisie could enter the Champions League directly in 2024.

If PSV do manage to reach the main tournament this season, it will also be good news for other Dutch clubs. This season, the Netherlands is active in 3 European Championships with Ajax, PSV Eindhoven, Feyenoord, FC Twente and AZ. These clubs have two important goals in Europe in the coming months. Make sure Holland No. 7 stays ahead of Portugal and make sure Holland outshine France No. 5.

PSV Eindhoven to the main tournament of the European Champions League?

The Netherlands can already take a huge step in the right direction early in the season. Coincidentally, PSV Eindhoven will play French club Monaco on Tuesday, August 9th. The first leg in Monaco ended 1-1, and the return begins in Eindhoven at 8.30 pm. If PSV wins, it will play in the final preliminary round of the Champions League. Union Saint-Gilloise (Belgium) or Rangers FC (Scotland, coached by Giovanni van Bronckhorst) is considered the opponent. If PSV fails against Monaco, it will go to the European League, where Feyenoord is also active.
