One of the new features in iOS 15 is Private Relay. This hides your IP address and you can surf the Internet anonymously. You must turn on Private Relay. We show how it works.
Read on after the announcement.
This is how you turn on Private Relay
Do you have a paid iCloud subscription? Then you might have noticed that the service has been renamed iCloud Plus. Apple places more emphasis on privacy. One of the most important new features is Private Relay. This hides your IP address (the “home address” of your Internet connection) and browsing behavior in Safari. This way no one, not even Apple, can see the websites you visit.
Note: Unfortunately, if you are using the free iCloud version with 5GB of storage, you cannot activate the private transfer. Do you have a paid subscription with 50 GB, 200 GB or 2 TB storage space? Then running Private Relay is very easy if you follow the step-by-step plan below.
- go to settings;
- Tap your name at the top of the screen;
- select “iCloud”;
- Go to “Private conversion (beta)”;
- Tap the slider to activate the private transfer.
Private retransmission is often compared to a VPN (Virtual Private Network). This is only partially true. A virtual private network (VPN) anonymizes all your internet traffic. Your Relay doesn’t do that. It only works if you are using Apple’s Safari. When you browse the web in another browser, only your activity is visible. In addition, many people use a VPN to change their geographical location. For example, they can access a wider range of Netflix in the US. This is also not possible with Private Relay.
The feature is also still in beta, so you may run into issues. Of course you can also turn off private conversion if you wish.
