Iran accuses US of trying to seize oil tanker

Iran has accused the United States of trying to seize an Iranian oil tanker. Iran’s Revolutionary Guards say soldiers have thwarted a US naval attempt in the Gulf of Oman. The incident is said to have taken place south of the port city of Sabah; Iran did not say when.

Anonymous US government officials oppose Iran’s reading to Reuters. In fact, they say, Iran has seized an oil tanker. According to officials, Iran seized the ship with the Vietnamese flag last month and the U.S. navy was only in the area to monitor the situation.

Nuclear cord

Iranian elite forces have frequently seized oil tankers in the Gulf of Oman and the Strait of Hormuz in recent years. Earlier, Iranian expert Peyman Jafari (UvA) explained to NOS that the seizures were mainly a manifestation of power and that the regime wanted to increase pressure on the international community to lift sanctions against the country and conclude a new nuclear deal.

In that 2015 agreement, Iran, the United States, Russia, China, France, Great Britain and Germany agreed to cut Iran’s nuclear program. This is to prevent the country from developing nuclear weapons. In response, sanctions on Iran were lifted.

In 2018, the United States unilaterally withdrew from the agreement. According to then-President Trump, the country continues to develop nuclear weapons despite the agreement. The United States subsequently increased sanctions against the country. At the time, Europe announced it wanted to keep the deal alive, but it was under great pressure.

International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors are said to be monitoring compliance with the agreement, but the UN Nuclear Monitoring Organization recently said it was becoming difficult to measure Iran’s compliance with the 2015 nuclear deal.

No inspectors

Since February, the country has no longer allowed IAEA inspectors. However, the IAEA is allowed to view most nuclear facilities with surveillance cameras. The country has seen a significant increase in the presence of highly enriched uranium since May.

Ali Bakeri Gani, one of Iran’s top negotiators, said talks on a new agreement would continue in Vienna on November 29. US President Biden has said he wants to renew the 2015 agreement.
