Jean-Theon Van Reyes (1960) has always been fascinated by the representation of space. This propelled him to photography at the beginning of this century. For more than ten years, h? Interior with a preference for “ugly spaces” that usually go unnoticed. Is h? The hidden (“remaining”) spaces of Chicago’s stunning buildings have been depicted, as are the many disjointed theaters and museums that have undergone extensive renovations in Amsterdam.

As of 2015, the focus will shift from the space to the experience of that space. h? intervenes in space, and manipulates the incident light, to achieve spatial qualities that h? Experiment to confirm. These interventions are becoming increasingly important, and starting in 2018, Van Rees will create the entire space being photographed.

This building process is intuitive, looking for the moment when Van Rees sees through the camera a space where h? Never seen before. Only then is a photo taken, after which the space is demolished or converted into a new one.

Of course, Van Reyes still photographed spaces in places that fascinated him. This creates a dialogue between the studio’s ‘observations of the outside world’ and the studio’s ’embedded spaces’, which constantly offer new perspectives and artistic possibilities.
