Lyneth Bierenstein leaves the field on crutches, striker remains with Orange in New Zealand | Lions at the World Cup

Bierenstein had to be replaced by Katja Snoijs three minutes before the end after a charge from Diana Gomez’s right ankle. The Juventus striker later left Dunedin’s Forsyth Barr Stadium on crutches and was examined this morning. It showed that the severity of the injury was not too bad. It’s not yet clear whether Behrenstein will be able to play against the United States on Thursday, but he will remain in national coach Andries Jonger’s squad.

And, now that the World Championship has officially started for the Orange in Australia and New Zealand, the Juventus attack can no longer be changed. Shanice Van de Sanden returns home after traveling to the other side of the world as a reserve. No substitute can be called for any currently injured player.

Behrenstein started on the bench against Portugal and, along with Liege Martens, formed a two-headed Orange vanguard as all-time top scorer Vivienne Miedema was unable to travel to Australia and New Zealand with a cruciate ligament injury.

The Orange Lions trained in Dunedin today before returning to base camp in Tauranga. There will be a private practice session on Tuesday, after which the next flight to Wellington awaits on Wednesday. The second group game is on Thursday (03:00 Dutch time) against the defending world champions USA.
