If the water temperature rises somewhat, the risks are greatly reduced

In a scenario in which more greenhouse gases are emitted, humanity will also have to deal with the consequences of changing fish populations. According to the study, cod and lobster are at high risk. This species lives in waters near low-income countries, where the population is economically dependent on fishing.

In the other scenario, scientists took the agreements from the Paris climate agreement as their starting point. Hence, the average ocean temperature will rise by one to two degrees by the year 2100. In this case, the risk to almost the entire marine life (98.2 percent) would be reduced or even completely eliminated.

Scientists from countries such as Canada, Germany and the Philippines participated in the research. With the Climate Risk Index, researchers hope to contribute to solutions to conserve marine animals.
