New Year’s Eve was restless in Arnemuiden last year. Car tires and boards were set on fire and many pelted emergency services with heavy fireworks. This year, the villagers have come together to prevent this. Five weeks ago, eight mothers came up with the idea of organizing their own party to celebrate the New Year quietly.
“The party starts at 4pm and it’s already very busy. The audience is very lively. There are a lot of old people, young people too. It varies a lot, I think it’s especially busy after 12 am,” says Mirjam van Belzen, one of the organizers.
Organizers have had a lot to organize in recent weeks. The municipality of Middleburg also helped out and additional help came from the village itself. There is a DJ in the tent at the Sports Arena de Blicken and a darts tournament is organized at the beginning of the evening. “It’s a lot of fun. I won the darts, so it’s going well,” says one of the partygoers. With a friend they stood on the dartboard. “I have to fill in for someone, so I screw around for a while,” says the Arnhemuiden resident.
The party will last till 3 pm today. Not only are moms organizing the party, but dads are also on guard to make sure everything runs smoothly.
“We’re very positive this evening, we’re not going to look back at previous years anymore, we’re going to be positive about this. It’s completely new, so you can’t compare it to previous years. Who knows, it will be a success and we’ll do it year after year,” Van Pelsen said.
