Dutch referees Franca Overtoom and Paul van Boekel will attend the FIFA World Cup in Australia and New Zealand this summer. Overtoom was selected as the assistant referee, Van Boekel as the video referee.
FIFA selected 33 referees, 55 assistant referees (line referees) and 19 video referees. Van Boekel was also active in this position at the end of last year at the Men’s World Cup in Qatar. Then Danny McKelley officiated two group games. The Dutchman stayed in Qatar for a long time and had a chance to win a match at the decisive stage of the tournament, but to his disappointment he was no longer appointed.
FIFA has selected three women referees for the men’s World Cup. Only French Stephanie Frappart was allowed to officiate (Germany – Costa Rica). For the Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, FIFA has primarily chosen female referees. The majority of the video judges are men, although there were also six women for the first time.
Dutch soccer players have qualified for the World Cup. National coach Anders Juncker’s team will meet defending champions the United States, Vietnam and a country from the play-offs in the group stage.
