Residents, business as well as representatives of the cultural group around Willemsplein, schools around Noordhoekring and other stakeholders will participate in the design of the new Cityring. The ‘parking ring’ should be ready by the end of 2026.
At the end of 2021, the city council decided to ban traffic from the city ring. This is necessary to maintain easy access to the city center for traffic that needs to be there, such as residents, visitors to stores/restaurants/stages, employees, emergency services, buses and taxis. Less traffic also means downtown will be greener, more fun, and safer. What exactly the successor to City Circuit will look like next year will be decided by 3 planning teams.
Alderman Rik Grashoff: “Making a design that meets all technical requirements, user desires and perfect images is a difficult task. That is why it is important for us to go through this process together. With the people who live on it, work on it or use it daily in their work. In this way, we guarantee access to A design that fits perfectly in a growing city centre.”
Each planning team gets its own micro-design. The municipality, business people, organizations from the area, and traffic engineering designers are working together on this design. And this is a complex task, there are all kinds of technical requirements and other things to consider. For example, events such as an exhibition that should have enough space left. Good communication with Spoorlaan and Stadsforum is also important. But there’s also scope for making choices together: We’re choosing more green space, but should there also be more space for parking bikes, the arts, or the bleachers? By the end of 2022, the first design for which the municipality is organizing an information evening should be available. The board will make a final decision on the design in the spring of 2023.
Working in planning teams, the complex task, but also the need to maintain easy access to the city center while working, has consequences for planning. Construction is carried out in stages. So that the city center can be easily reached in the meantime.
