Shell Oil and Gas Group will build offshore floating wind farms with Scottish energy supplier ScottishPower. This will be the first on a large scale in British waters. The wind farms will be located off the east coast of Scotland and are supposed to generate enough electricity in the future to provide electricity for six million households.

Floating wind farms are suitable for use in deep water, where no firm foundations can be installed. According to Shell and ScottishPower, the technology has already proven itself, but has not been applied as widely as it is now in Scottish waters.

The new wind farms, for which Shell and ScottishPower won the tender, are called MarramWind and CampionWind and should generate a total of 5 gigawatts of power. It is not yet known when the projects should be ready. The two companies reported that development plans had begun but that no final investment decisions had been made. They have already built 2 GW offshore wind farms and have another 11 GW in development.

New projects should contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions in the UK. “Renewable electricity will play an increasingly important role in our strategy,” said Wael Sawan, project lead at Shell. “We will provide more of the low-carbon products and services customers need on their way to net zero emissions.”
