Baseball players go with a renewed European title selection

10:06 am: Baseball players in the Netherlands national team are searching for the European title with a renewed selection. National coach Evert Jan Huyn takes four first-timers to Italy, where the European Championship will take place next week. The national coach has passed a number of experienced players, including veteran bowlers Rob Cordmans (46) and Degomar Markwell (41).

“We’ve had the luxury of being able to build on the same group of top players for years,” says head coach Tjerk Smeets of KNBSB. “After OKT, we made the selection with the national coach and coaching staff to fit a number of young boys and start ‘rebuilding’.” Led by Hensley Mullins, baseball players failed to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics in June.

With Junior Martina, Aaron de Groot, Julian Reeb and Jayden Gunesch, the Dutch national team is on track to win their fourth consecutive European title and 24th in total in Italy. Compared to OKT in Mexico, the average age of selection is three years lower. “In conversations with the national coach and the other coaches, we got a good look at which of the slightly older players are still doing well in this European Championship and can still mentor this team with their experience, so we can strike a great balance between young talents. And they have experience choosing us,” says Smits. “The goal is clear: we want to be European champions.”

The orange team will start the European Championship on Sunday in Turin against Slovakia and then also play in the group against the Czech Republic and Sweden. Numbers 1 and 2 from the group qualify for the quarter-finals.
