Sick Wout van Aert will almost certainly miss the Tour of Flanders | Cycling

“It would be a huge setback,” sports director Grisha Nirman admits. “Wout is not feeling well, so he stays at home. We will have to dispense with him during the survey. If he just misses the day, it won’t be a big deal. But there is a chance that he will miss Ronde.”

Van Aert is one of the favorites to win the most beautiful matches in Flanders. The Belgian has never won the Tour of Flanders. It was the sixth last year. This year Van Aert actually won the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and the E3 Saxo Bank Classic in Harelbeke.

Nirman says he’s already working on Plan B. “Of course Wout cannot be replaced, but fortunately we have a team in good shape. Tiesj Benoot and Christophe Laporte are currently among the top riders in the peloton. We will have to watch him for a while. At the moment I cannot say when the decision on Wout will be made. We’ll know more tomorrow. But if he feels fit on Sunday, we might let Woot begin.”

Dutch champion Timo Rosen, Mike Teunissen, Belgium’s Nathan van Hooydonk and Italy’s Eduardo Avene are also on the Jumbo-Visma roster for the start of the Tour of Flanders.
