Kanwest Wegmann finished seventh in the World Cup Final
1.30 pm: Martina Wegman finished seventh in the K1 final at the World Championships slalom slalom in Augsburg, Germany. The gold went to German Ricarda Funk (30).
The 33-year-old Wigmann qualified ninth for the final battle in Augsburg on Saturday morning. Lena Teunissen clocked the 20th time and was not allowed to go out in the final. Wegmann also finished seventh at the Tokyo Olympics last year.
2nd Place Terpstra in the American Snowshoe
10:15 am: Mountain biker Anne Terpstra finished second in the short race at the Snowshoe World Cup in America. The 31-year-old Terpstra had to tolerate only American Gwendalyn Gibson in the United States. Gibson was 2 seconds faster.
Terpstra is in second place in the ranking. The lead is in the hands of Australian Rebecca McConnell, who finished 18th in the short race.
David Nordman finished 27th in the men’s race.
Broxby beats six-time champion Isner in Atlanta
8.44 am: American tennis player John Isner will not be competing this weekend for his seventh ATP title in Atlanta in nine years. The 37-year-old Isner lost in the quarter-finals 3-6 6-1 6-4 to compatriot Jenson Broxby, ranked 43 in the world.
Isner, ranked 25th in the world, took the title in Atlanta last year and was the best there in 2013, 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018. He also reached the final in 2016. He then lost to Nick Kyrgios, who pulled out at the last minute this year.
Broxby, 21, who has yet to win the title, will compete in the fourth round against fellow countryman Francis Tiafoe. This 6-4, 6-2 was too strong for Brandon Nakashima, who reached the final fight last year. The other semi-final match will be between Australia’s Alex de Minaur and Ilya Ivashka of Belarus.
The US hard court season begins in Atlanta. The US Open, the last major tournament of the year, begins in New York on Monday, August 29.
Liverpool without Oxlade-Chamberlain at the start of the new season
08.33 am: Liverpool will not have Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain at the start of the new season. The 28-year-old midfielder sustained a hamstring injury in pre-season during the exhibition match against Crystal Palace on July 15.
“It’s about the hamstrings and we all hate that word. A hamstring injury happens sometimes and now it’s the bull’s turn,” said coach Jurgen Klopp, who did not say how long the midfielder would be out of circulation. The operation is not necessary.
Liverpool opens the season on Saturday with the Charity Shield match. Then Manchester City is the opponent. Fulham will be the opponent in the Premier League next weekend.
Oxlade Chamberlain came from Arsenal five years ago.
