Australian athletes will not be allowed to closely cheer on their compatriots who compete in other sports at the upcoming Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, UK. Mission chief Petria Thomas said this is one of the measures being taken to reduce the risk of coronavirus transmission.
“We must take these measures to reduce the transmission of coronavirus and other diseases,” says Thomas. “Our main goal is to ensure our athletes arrive fit and ready to perform.”
From July 28 to August 8, the Commonwealth Games will be held by the member states of the Commonwealth, i.e. Great Britain and most of its former colonies. It concerns about 5,000 athletes from 72 countries. Australian athletes must also wear face masks from the moment they leave their hotel rooms.
