Submarine issue: British defense minister defends agreement with US and Australia – Belgium

(Belka) New British Secretary of Defense Lis Truss today defended his country’s defense agreement (AUKUS) with the United States and Australia. The new alliance sparked a fierce diplomatic battle with France, but Minister Truss did not comment. Earlier, Prime Minister Boris Johnson told parliament that relations with France were “firm”.

According to the British Secretary of Defense, he wrote in The Sunday Telegraph, The Sunday Edition and The Daily Telegraph’s sister newspaper that the deal would improve security and create hundreds of talented jobs. For example, the Americans are expected to work with the British to build new nuclear submarines for Australia, which would terminate the agreement with France. The three countries will share technologies related to artificial intelligence. Secretary Truss said the agreement underscores the importance the UK places on the Pacific region. “We are champions of freedom and the institutions of freedom in the world. But freedoms must be protected, so we build strong relationships around the world.” AUKUS is seen as the opposite weight to the growing Chinese military influence in Southeast Asia. Britain accuses itself of being the “junior partner” of the French alliance and “a gateway” to the United States. Earlier this week, France recalled its ambassadors from the United States and Australia, but not from London. (Belgium)
