The European Union accuses Russia of launching a cyber attack on a satellite network | right Now

The European Union accuses Russia of launching a cyber attack on a major satellite network. The attack caused damage not only in Ukraine, but also in other countries of the European Union.

The attack, which occurred when Russia invaded Ukraine, disrupted the so-called KA-SAT network of the American telecoms company Viasat. This caused problems for the Ukrainian military and a host of government agencies, companies and Internet users.

Other EU countries have also been affected by the cyber attack. Tens of thousands of modems failed and a large number of German windmills stopped, among other things.

The European Union’s foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, said the cyber attack “definitely supported the Russian invasion”. He stressed that the European Union specifically holds the Russian government accountable.

It is the first time that the European Union has strongly accused Moscow of launching a cyber attack. So far, Brussels has not gone beyond claiming that such attacks were launched, for example, from Russian soil.

Borrell said the operation is “another example of Russia’s continuing pattern of irresponsible behavior in cyberspace.” He says this could “endanger the security of European citizens”.

The US government also believes that Moscow has a role in disrupting the network. The United Kingdom also joined on Tuesday.
