The new House Modernes bike shed on the Lange Viestraat in Utrecht is open today. With space for 900 bikes, it is the largest parking facility in the city centre.
Alderman Lot van Hooijdonk attended for the opening of the parking facility. The latest parking facility was described as a “nice” place. Inside there is not only space for regular bikes, but also a place for cargo bikes and bikes with a box. Wagons can also be rented in the shed and there is a system that shows how many places are still available.
Parking is free for the first 24 hours and has varying opening times. The parking facility is open Monday through Wednesday from 7 a.m. to 1 a.m., Thursday from 7 a.m. to 12 midnight, and on Friday through Sunday you can go there 24 hours a day.

With the parking facility, the municipality hopes to provide more space for cyclists and make the city center more accessible and attractive to visitors. But, as local councilman Lot van Hooydonk admitted during the opening, there are still very few official parking spaces in the centre. So the search for buildings in the city center for parking facilities continues, but van Hooydonk stresses that this is not an easy feat.
In the meantime, work is also underway on a broader plan on how to deal with the scarce space in the city center and how to park bikes.
