The Netherlands was the first country to qualify for the quarter-finals of the World Cup in Qatar on Saturday. USA was defeated 3-1 in the round of 16.

Memphis Depay (10.) and Daley Blind (45. +1) made it 2-0 in the first half at Khalifa International Stadium in Al-Rayyan. Haji Wright (76.) succeeded in the second half with a goal to connect. Denzel Dumfries (81), who assisted on the first two goals, quickly crushed American hopes.

The Orange pulled away well early in the game. Pulisic kicked head-on with Nobert on the legs of the Dutch goalkeeper. In the tenth minute, Dumfries found his teammate Depay with a measured cross, the FC Barcelona striker put the skin in the lower left corner. Wea tested Neubert on the other side with a long shot. Blind made it 2-0 just before half-time, and tapped a pass from Dumfries again.

Riam almost scored the equalizer early in the second half, with Jakobo directing his effort in front of the goal line. Once again, Dumfries’ cross sparked unrest in the Americans’ back lines, as goalkeeper Turner blocked a Zimmerman own goal. The Netherlands appeared to be in a seat, but Depay almost helped the USA with a poor backhand pass. After less control, Wright had to swerve wide when Dumfries blocked a goal. Moments later the score was 2-1 true. Wright converted a Pulisic cross and sent the ball into the goal. But Louis van Gaal’s side reacted quickly: Blind crossed Dumfries, who smashed the ball up against the ropes in no time. The United States can no longer make a fist.

Next Friday, Orange will play in the quarter-finals against the winner of the match between Argentina and Australia.
