The Turkish opposition united around who will confront Erdogan | outside

After previous disagreements, the six main opposition parties in Turkey decided to enter the presidential elections with the joint candidate Kemal Kilicdaroglu. By working together, they hope to increase their chances of defeating incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on May 14.

And on Friday, another rift emerged within the coalition after the right-wing IYI party, the second largest in the bloc, pulled out. Meral Akşener, President of IYI, did not agree with Kilicdaroglu’s selection. According to her, he could not defeat Erdogan.

Vice Presidents

But the six opposition parties have now reached a compromise. Kilicdaroglu remains the joint candidate, but it has been agreed that the mayors of Istanbul and Ankara, Ekrem Imamoglu and Mansur Yavas, will become the vice-presidents if the opposition candidate emerges victorious.

Audience members applauded as Akşener joined five other party leaders at a meeting on Monday night.

The May election promises to be one of the biggest challenges President Erdogan has faced in his 20 years in power. He has been president since 2014. From 2003 to 2014, Erdogan was the country’s prime minister.
