Is there still a place in the Netherlands for wolves?

This, of course, depends on who you ask. Recently, the debate has raged about whether there is a place for the wolf in our country.

Environmentalists applaud the arrival of the wolf. But many ranchers see no point in further spreading across the country. They are afraid that the wolf will attack their livestock. Many people in Drenthe say they no longer dare let their children play in the woods. More on this fear later.

It is not known exactly how much space the Netherlands still has for the wolf. Outside Research As wolf expert Glenn Lilyfield did in 2012, there appears to be room for at least 16 packs. There could be more. This depends on the resilience of wolves and whether people accept the wolf in their environment. There are currently three cans in the Netherlands.

In principle, wolves can live in any landscape. However, they have a strong preference for an area that is half forested. So it appears that the Veluwe and much of the northeastern Netherlands in particular are suitable habitats for the wolf.

Utrechts Heuvelrug, Masduinen, eastern North Brabant and parts of Flevoland can also be suitable for a wolf.
