Two children found dead under the rubble of a collapsed apartment in Florida outside the country

The children are four and ten years old. “The loss of children is too much to bear,” Mayor Daniela Levine Cava said. “Our community, our nation and the world mourn all these families who have lost loved ones.”

Earlier today, the mayor said at least 145 people are still missing. It is unknown if they were on Surfside when it collapsed last week. No one was found alive under the rubble until shortly after the building collapsed.

Tragedy

Sources told Reuters news agency that the US government will conduct an investigation into how the apartment collapsed. It is not yet clear what caused the collapse of the Champlain Towers South complex. Three years ago, an engineer warned of significant structural damage to the twelve-story building. The owners’ association warned in April of worsening damage to the car park and also reported roof damage. Work will soon begin on the 40-year-old complex.

President Joe Biden visits the crash site Thursday with his wife, Jill. “It is an unimaginably difficult time for the families who have suffered through this tragedy,” Biden said.
