China has reacted angrily to a digital meeting announced at the United Nations on human rights abuses against Uyghurs in the Xinjiang region. Germany, Great Britain and the United States hosted the conference, but China wants the meeting to be canceled.
According to the Chinese delegation to the UN, the video conference was “based on pure lies and political leanings”. The Chinese also believe that organized countries are guilty of interfering in domestic affairs.
China argues that the current situation in Xinjiang has never been better. According to China, “stability, rapid economic growth and harmonious living of all ethnic groups”.
Forced labor and torture
Investigations by various human rights groups and news organizations have shown that at least one million Uyghurs and other Muslim minorities are being held in camps.
In addition, stories about torture, forced contraception, and forced labor are constantly coming out. Human rights organizations talk about genocide. Earlier this year, the United States described the situation as genocidal.
As for China, these are ‘re-education camps’ to combat religious extremism.
“Despite US killings of Muslims in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, the United States says it is concerned about the human rights of Muslims,” the Chinese UN envoy said. “The United States and its allies have killed the largest number of Muslims in the world.”
