Botic van de Zandschulp’s participation in the prestigious tournament at Indian Wells has been a major disappointment. The Dutchman had to retire early on Friday with a leg injury in his first match against Ilya Ivashka.
For 27-year-old Van de Zandschulp, nothing seemed amiss at first. In the first set of her second round match against her Belarusian opponent Ivashka, she quickly took a 1–4 lead but surrendered it 7–5.
In the second set, van de Sandschulp underwent treatment on his leg, after which he tried again. With a 3-2 deficit in the second set, he decided to leave the track.
The match against Ivashka was Van de Santsulp’s first at Indian Wells. Due to his seed position, Weinendaaler was allowed to skip the first round in the US state of California.
Tallon Grapes is the only Dutch player left in the highly-regarded tournament, which is considered a fifth Grand Slam. He was allowed to skip his compatriot in the first round and will play for the first time against Argentine Guido Bella on Saturday.
The tournament at Indian Wells starts on Monday and runs until March 19. American Taylor Fritz is the defending champion in the men’s category. An unvaccinated Novak Djokovic is no longer in the US.
