Max Verstappen has been named Driver of the Year for the second time in a row. In an election conducted by the famous trade magazine Autosport, the Dutch Formula 1 world champion received the most votes. Charles Leclerc, also from Formula 1, finished second. IndyCar champion Will Power was third and Formula E champion Stoffel Vandoorne was fourth.
“A big thank you to the fans who voted me the best international driver for the second year in a row,” Verstappen said in a video message at the Autosport gala in London. “We had a great season, even if it was a difficult start. We were able to turn that around very quickly and I have to thank the team for that,” said the Red Bull captain, who won no less than fifteen trophies this year. Register in Formula 1.
Drivers from all categories of racing have the chance to win an Autosport award. Last year, Verstappen was named Driver of the Year for the first time. He was then ahead of Lewis Hamilton, just like in the fight for the Formula 1 world title.
Sebastian Vettel received an oeuvre in London for all his achievements in Formula 1. The 35-year-old German, who became a four-time world champion, recently ended his career. Vettel collected his award himself.
George Russell also received a prize in London. The Mercedes driver’s victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix was declared his “moment of the year”. The Briton took his first Formula 1 win in Sao Paulo.In the polls, that moment was favored by Verstappen’s record victory in Mexico and Nyck de Vries’ sensational debut at the Italian Grand Prix. The Frisian driver finished ninth at Monza as a substitute in Williams and scored equal points in the world championship. For the next season, De Vries was given a permanent Formula 1 place at AlphaTauri.
