Where does phobia come from and what is the most common?

There are all kinds of phobias, but where do they come from, who is affected by them and what are the most common ones?

How does phobia arise?

Phobias often start in childhood, but many people don’t develop it until later in life. This happens when a normal, naturally manageable fear suddenly affects your daily life because you are often in contact with it. Then this fear turns into a phobia. There is no specific cause that causes phobias, for many species no clear cause can ever be found. However, there are risk factors for developing a phobia, such as a traumatic experience, learned behavior, or heredity.

More common in women

Research conducted by the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom shows that women are twice as likely to develop a phobia than men. Women who are younger than 35, who are pregnant or who have just given birth, are more likely to develop an anxiety disorder. According to English researchers, this is because women often worry more than men, because they are more sensitive to stress and have a different hormonal balance. Another reason for this study’s findings may be that men are generally less likely to seek help when they are afraid of something.
